January 2004 has been unusually cold, with wind-chill approaching -100 F in the mountains. On one particularly cold day, the weatherman noted dryly that it was 30 F colder in New Hampshire (on Mount Washington) than at the South Pole! A tragedy occurred on January 15 when Kenneth Holmes -- a Monadnock Park ranger -- died of hypothermia while camping alone in the Pemigewasset Wilderness. |
