In September 1994 the canoe group from the UU church
camps out for a couple nights on Umbagog Lake in
northern NH.
Some of our group, including Mark Nash and Don Reilly,
land at our island campsite.
I went canoe camping with this group most springs and sometimes falls. They are the only adult group I know that enjoys the outdoors just for being there (like me), without the need to fish, hunt or whatever. It is neat to hike or paddle, play and talk around a campfire, sleep in a tent, and explore nature. The only such outdoors stuff I had done previously was when I helped lead Boy Scout or church youth groups; but I met Jim McCormick playing squash at the YMCA and he invited me to go on a canoe outing with this group, and I stayed on. |
