Canoe Trips           < back   Umbagog   next >

xxx on Lake Umbagog in New Hampshire in September 1994

That's my solo canoe and food cooler in an early-morning fog photo. I had played around with a rowing conversion kit for my canoe and this is one of the first trips I tried it out on. Sitting in the middle and facing backwards is not as much fun for exploring, but having two blades in the water makes it twice as easy (and fast) to move. One time (I think it was on this trip) the wind came up creating big waves and between the two we had to rescue one of our tandem canoes because they could not make it back against the wind to shore. But with the oars it was easy (would NOT have been if I was a solo canoe paddler).
