inside the gatehouse in May at Mine Falls Park in Nashua NH

We get a chance to enter the gatehouse (which is usually closed) to see the mechanisms to raise and lower the gates feeding water from the Nashua River to the Nashua Canal (to power the cotton mill down on Canal Street). The gates (under floor) were raised and lowered with a hand crank, with those gears allowing hand-powered cranking, and the huge stones near the ceiling as counter weights.
