Cicada-killer Wasp with its prey in September at Gibbet Hill near Groton in northeastern Massachusetts

Climbing up the side of the firetower porta-potty is another nasty bug: a Cicada-killer Wasp (Sphecius speciosus) with its prey in tow. This female has paralized the Cicada (you can see her tail stinger embedded in the Cicada) with the intent of burying the body with one egg in it; the larva will then slowly feast on its paralyzed, but still-alive, meal. Yuck.

But I think it is amazing the wasp can hold her bigger-than-her prey with just two legs (and tail stinger) and climb a flat surface with just two other legs (with sticky feet) and occasional wing flapping.
