| Chuck H. and Fred bushwhacked to Elephant Mountain (3774-ft; western Maine) in August 2005. We drive in three miles on a lumber road (just past Clearwater Brook, off South Arm Road). From there the hike is only two miles round trip; but it takes us four hours. Chuck stands at the end of the lumber road, putting a waypoint into his GPS before we start the bushwhack to Elephant's summit (seen in the upper left). Unfortunately, we are slowed down by lots of thick evergreens, such as those to Chuck's left. |
