Common Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) crossing the hiking trail to Crotched Mountain in New Hampshire

By chance we come upon this Common Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) fearlessly crossing the trail in front of us. Wow, this is the closest I have ever been to this normally elusive mammal!
