An inchworm hitches a ride back to the car on my pants, so I take its photo. It is the caterpillar of a Canadian Melanolophia (Melanolophia canadaria). This family of moths (over 1000 species in North America!) has only two (or three) pairs of caterpillar hind legs (instead of the usual five), so rather than crawling along smoothly it takes inch-long steps (hence the name). |
