a bee opens the petals of Bottle Gentian (Gentiana clausa) in September at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens

I have always wondered how permanently-closed flowers -- like this Bottle Gentian (Gentiana clausa) -- ever get cross-pollinated. And here's my answer: a bee claws open the petals and heads in to deposit pollen and collect nectar.
