I unsuccessfully attempted to solo Carr Mountain (3453-ft; White Mountains, NH) on an afternoon in early March 2003. The first half of the trail (foreground) was groomed for snowmobiles and was an easy walk. However, the second half (where I am standing on the way out) was tough: deep untrodden snow, faded blazes, and few trail-location clues. I broke lots of spur trails and wound up hopelessly off course. (Hiking from the Warren side is much better.) |
